The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) celebrates 75 years as a trade association in 2022. Currently, the NTCA has a membership of over 1,400 contractors, and is recognized as the largest tile contractor’s association in the world. I joined the NTCA in 2005 to increase my knowledge and skills in the installation of tile and stone, and to build a professional network of like-minded business owners. In 2012, I was appointed as a Regional Director of the NTCA. In this role I was responsible for promoting our trade association, disseminating best practices, and recruiting new members. My involvement as a Regional Director gave me a unique perspective about the value of the association and its potential to raise installation standards in the tile industry.
The original founders of the NTCA recognized the need for installers to hone their installation skills and to learn about new materials and installation methods that are being introduced in the marketplace. At the time that I joined the NTCA, most of my projects were installed on a mortar bed. Following my involvement in NTCA committees and sponsored trade shows, I became aware of innovative materials and new methods that were being used in the field. I also became familiar with the training opportunities offered by NTCA and participated in several workshops. These workshops helped me to improve my tile installation skills and become familiar with the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook for Ceramic, Glass and Stone Tile Installation. The NTCA Reference Manual is another key resource on which I rely in my daily business practices. The NTCA Reference Manual has become an integral part of the professional tile installers’ toolkit. In fact, everyone who is installing tile should own current copies of both the TCNA Handbook and NTCA Reference Manual to navigate the more complex world of tile installation.
Being NTCA President during the 75th anniversary feels very special, and I look forward to the celebrations that will take place in 2022. My involvement on a volunteer basis in this industry has been rewarding. Later this year, I will hand off the presidency to Sam Bruce of Visalia Ceramic Tile in California. He is the next generation of leadership in the industry.
These are very exciting times for NTCA, and its membership. We hope you can join to celebrate 75 years of the association’s contributions to the tile industry.
